The LandRoller motto is “get out of line”
which is appropriate because the unique design features two large
wheels mounted at an angle on the outside of each shoe. The angle of
the wheels allows for a much larger wheel while maintaining a low
center of gravity. Because the wheels are larger the LandRollers can
traverse terrain beyond paved sidewalks and specially made skate

Sometimes it's hard to tell when the next
big innovation is going to strike. When roller skates first came
out, the basic design stayed pretty much untouched for decades. Then
some guy decided that the four wheels on each corner of the skate
should be put in a straight line down the middle, and this inline
pattern remained the industry standard for several more decades. So
the big question is, what will the next step in skating evolution
reveal? Well look no further, for the sultans of spin over at
LandRoller may just have hit upon it with the introduction of their
Terra 9 skates. The big idea: replace the .... |

Radical. Innovative. Revolutionary. An apt
description of local Olympian Apolo Ohno, but also of his new
favorite mode of transportation off the ice: LandRoller skates. The
peculiar design was first seen in the Jackie Chan film "Around the
World in 80 Days" — an "antiqued" version was designed by British
comedian/actor Steve Coogan's wacky inventor character. When Ohno
first saw the skates himself, he says, he decreed, "They're sick!"
And he
meant that in the nicest way. Ohno was so smitten with the
revolutionary skates that he
signed on to endorse them. "I hooked
up with the company so I could take a closer look, because they
weren't on the market at that time," Ohno said in an interview. That
put Ohno ahead ...

Skates are nothing new- ice skates date
back to 3000 BC, and land skates or “skeelers” were invented by a
Dutchman in the 1700’s. In-line skating was invented by Scott Olson
in 1979, and he founded Rollerblade in 1983 (according to this article in About.com). Since then, there have
been refinements- lighter, stronger plastics, better brakes- but no
real improvements ....
